Illustration Friday: expired

When I read the word "expired", I thought of the euphemistically worded directions on our "mouse cube" mouse trap: "Check the trap frequently so the mouse will not expire." Maybe this little girl checked the trap frequently enough to catch an un-expired mouse, and decided to keep it as a pet.

I wasn't sure where to take the week's IF word until I remembered this quote from a Thomas Hardy book. It's a rather pessimistic attitude (hey, it's Hardy--what did you expect?), but the quote always makes me laugh, and it seemed to fit the theme of this picture.

And I was inspired. :)
