Lady Clare sketch (if: Intention)

Pencil sketch; I plan to finish it in ink and watercolor
Lady Clare had no intention of keeping Lord Ronald ignorant of the truth . . .

I've long been planning to do some illustrations from Tennyson's poem Lady Clare; though it can't compete with J.W. Waterhouse's painting (left) I'm quite happy with the results so far.
[Here's the finished Lady Clare watercolor!]

In other news, today The Really-Truly Princess Test was showcased on The Children's Book Review!

  1. Beautiful sketch with super details! The dresses are great, and those flowers in the foreground are a terrific stylish touch. Love the little deer, too.

  2. The framing is great - hand position and facial expression very expressive. And I like how the flower breaks the frame.

  3. Thank you both! I took the idea of lilies from the poem, and was somewhat influenced in their placement by Mucha--he's always inspiring. :)
