Under the Rose Bush (IF: Refresh)

Graphite & Digital Color
On hot summer days nothing is more refreshing than sitting in a cool shadow.

  1. Oooh I love your style. It reminds me of some classic illustration style that I loved when I was a kid.

    1. Thank you! I have a weakness for the more classical styles. :)

  2. So sweet! It reminds me of classic illustration, too. This girl is much more coordinated than me if her hair is not getting snagged by many thorns. :)

    1. Hehe--perhaps this needs a companion "after" illustration? Hopefully she gets away in one piece. :D

  3. Such a nice, warm style! The digital color has a colored pencil look to it, which I like a lot.

    1. Thanks! I used a chalk brush on corel painter X. I like the texture it gave; I'm still compiling my list of favorite brushes in that program, but that may have to be one of them!

  4. What a delightful site you have! I recently discovered your work: I'm so glad to find a fellow artist! I love classic illustration styles as well (and we have a mutual affinity for mountains of paper). ; ) What roads have you chosen to study art? I'd love to know more!

    Many blessings,
    Breezy

    1. Hi Breezy, I'm a follower and admirer of your blog and artwork as well! It was fun to see your new portfolio site. I tend to have web-design ADD, but I think I'm finally pretty happy with my current layout. :) Ah yes, mountains of paper--sadly it seems like creativity and desk clutter go together for me...

I'm mostly self-taught; a few art classes here and there from local artists, and a selection of art books, but mostly lots of looking at the work of illustrators I admire and trying to pick up tips from them. It seems like there's a dearth of classical/children's illustration style "how-to" books (unless you're looking for a cartoon style!) What about you?
